TOPRO 6AP1 series of Thermal Protectors are protectors with overcurrent and overtemperature dual protection to precisely prevent damages of stalling or overcurrent to the motor. They were developed after Klixon 6AP to operate in wide temperature and current ranges, while providing THE SAME consistent performance characteristics and excellent reliability at MUCH LOWER prices. The 6AP1 operates as a sensitive power cut-out and is widely used in low voltage DC motors of automobile accessories, such as Window lift motors, Front and rear wiper motors, Sun roof motors, Adjuster motors, Antenna lift motors, Door lock actuators, Sliding door motors, Electric car seat motors, door-locks and various household electrical appliances.

Working Principle

6AP1 thermal protector is connected in parallel with PTC, and then is connected in series with the load (motor). The PTC will not produce high temperature when the load runs normally.

In case of load abnormity, the high temperature or large current that is caused will make 6AP1 thermal protector break the circuit, and now the PTC will produce high temperature and high resistance (the hot PTC will keep 6AP1 thermal protector disconnected), the load stops running.

When the power is manually cut off, PTC begins to cool. After a certain period of cooling, the temperature falls to the reset point, 6AP thermal protector resets to connect the circuit and the load resumes running.







Differential of terms: thermal protector, thermal switch, thermal protection switch, temperature switch, Thermal Cut-out, temperature controller, thermostat 
The terms thermal protector, thermal switch, temperature switch, temperature controller and thermostat all refer to a mechanical device that contains a bimetallic strip sensitive to temperature and is therefore used to trigger a snap action when the temperature rises to a preset point. The snap action can cut off or put through power supply to control the protected device.
Thermal protector is the most standard term. As in most cases a thermal protector is used to protect the motor of a machine, such as vacuum cleaner, power tools, mower, washing machine, compressor, the thermal protector is often referred to as a motor thermal protector or a thermal motor protector. As the thermal protector can make or break the circuit like a usual switch, it is also called a thermal switch or temperature switch. Since they are made with the key component, a bimetallic strip, they are also called bimetal Thermal Switches. A thermostat or temperature controller is used to control the temperature within a certain range. Unlike the motor thermal protector, the thermostat and temperature is often used in a heating device. Literally, thermal protection switches are the same  as thermal protectors or Thermal Switches.
TOPRO 17AM1 Motor Thermal Protectors are the same in quality and structure as 17AM thermal protectors made by Klixon, but much lower in price.
